The SSA Open Water Swimming Championships 2019 took place this morning at Constant Wind, NSRCC and saw a total of 15 swimmers take part in the race against the currents.
Serving as a qualifier to the SEA Games 2019, the men’s local race saw Ritchie Oh of APSC (Aquatic Performance Swim Club) clinch top spot after clocking a time of 2h 00m 18s. Luke Tan of Elite Swim Club was second in a time of 2h 02m 06s and 2017 SEA Games representative Erasmus Ang of Aquatic Masters Swim club was third in a time of 2h 02m 49s. "I wanted to swim my own race, and not get dragged by the other swimmers, and I am very happy to have made the SEA Games "A' mark. It is something that I have always dreamed of and have been working towards", said the youngster. All 3 swimmers who are the Singapore Sports School post-secondary students and alumni met the SEA Games A Qualifying time.
The Women’s local race saw 2017 SEA Games Silver Medalist Chantal Liew come home first in a time of 2h 05m 27s. Regine Goh of APSC was second (2h 12m 29s) and Genevieve Lye of Swimfast Aquatic Group was third (2h 12m 44s).
The Men’s Open category saw Olympic and World Champion Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands add another title to his name, when he touched the finishing gantry in 1h 52m 06s. Fellow Dutchmen, Pepijn Smits and Marcel Schouten finished second and third respectively in times of 1h 52m 52s and 1h 52m 53s.
