SSA will be hosting a Junior National Development Team Select Training Camp from 30 May-2 June 2018 (Wednesday- Saturday) at the OCBC Aquatic Centre to introduce junior swimmers to High Performance Pathways. The camp will include: · Training sessions with NTC Junior Squad under National Training Centre Head Coach Gary Tan · Sport Psychology sessions with SSI Sport Psychologist, · Nutrition with SSI Nutritionist, · Analysis and Swimming Fundamentals with SSI Biomechanist and NYSI Sport Science, · Recovery Techniques with SSI Exercise Physiologist. Swimmers 13-18 yrs will be selected based on ranked scores determined by the average of their best 3 performances at SNAG 2018 (FINA Points-Olympic Events Only). The Top 10 Males and Top 10 Females will receive invitations to attend. If any swimmer declines a place at the camp, the next swimmer in ranking will be offered the space until 10 girls and 10 boys have accepted. Overseas based swimmers who are ranked and invited must be back in Singapore at the time of the camp to participate. *Swimmers that are selected for Asian Games 2018 and Junior Pan Pac 2018 will not be eligible to attend this camp.
* Swimmers competed in SEA Games 2017, Commonwealth Youth Games 2017 and World Juniors 2017 will not be eligible to attend this camp as well.
Clubs with swimmers invited can nominate 1 coach to participate in the camp. SSA, SSI, NYSI coaches and Sport Science are working to streamline the high performance profiling of our junior swimmers with the aim of developing better interaction through sport science, starting at the club level, to improve coaches and athlete development. The camp provides a great opportunity to bridge these gaps and develop a system to interact at the club level through Sport Science and coaching support.
Each swimmer will be exposed to the ideology of what it means to part of “Team Singapore”. Identifying with the Team Singapore “We Are One” mind-set is crucial as we gear our junior swimmers towards Tokyo2020. We hope the lessons, methods and tools taught during the camp have lasting impact and become normal practice on an everyday basis and offer a platform for leadership when the athletes are back in their club environments.
SSA’s aim’s for this camp to be a positive experience for these young swimmers, exposing them to the commitment to training in and out of the pool required of elite athletes, that includes nutrition, sports psychology and recovery techniques. They will do some video analysis work that will focus on basic fundamentals and address concepts in streamline, balance and application to starts and turns. The goal is not to teach them different methods they are taught in their clubs but to help understand the importance of attention to detail and a focused mental approach to training toward excellence.
